LJ as it stands today

As most folks know, I don't write that often in my LJ, mainly due to duncandahusky posting more often about our adventures and having two people covering the same thing can be boring. However, if something very interesting happens or I want to show folks, I post it here.

So, why do I stay with LJ

Very simply, I am a big fan of reading what friends and folks I know are doing, see what what experiences they have done and makes for good conversation when I see that person.

I do have a fiction writing filter that I will post to very rarely, am I worried about being censored? Not really... If something offensive is in the story and LJ hates it and bans my user, I will be pissed but would place my writings elsewhere and either get my account back, or seek other avenues. Have folks had issues in the past for stupid reasons? Yeah, but that hasn't affected me and can't judge it was warranted or not.

I pay my $25 a year to have a paid account and I pay $10 for the extra userpics, so I am not so worried about ads. From what I have read, paid accounts and basic accounts will stay that way, if you stop paying, you go to a basic account. It is only new accounts that have the ad or pay system and I am okay with it. As footpad mentioned, just adblock the ads and say goodbye to them.

As for the strike? I feel there isn't a reason to strike. The strike will have a lot less people checking LJ and there will be a lot less updates, it will be sad that there won't be much to read, but at least it will give more time to do other stuff. The problem is that it isn't going to hurt SUP, if anything, the lack of a load on their servers and pipe will help them in the long run.

If you are unhappy with Livejournal, you can do a couple things
1) Write a letter, not email, but a real handwritten letter. It is more likely to be read.
2) No longer pay for the service. You will bounce to basic status, but that is money they don't have
3) Delete your account and go to another service. There are a lot of options out there and last I checked, the LJ software is still open source.

Livejournal has a nice interface to read what your 'friends' are doing and nothing I have found yet can really do that, outside of setting up all the different journals as RSS feeds, but Friends Only posts would be a thing of the past.

And yeah, someday everyone will leave to something new and different, which will have different challenges. For now though, I do plan on sticking here to read up on my friends. I hope you do too, but if not, that is understandable.

If you see me, please say hi! If I can't stop, I hope to see you around later in the con. Hoping to get to relax more and be able to talk and catch up with folks more this time around.

Only have real obligations (besides the usual stuff) is on Saturday at 11am and then the Fursuit Parade. Won't be in suit this year again, but I should be okay with that. Might try to help out at the Charity Auction and Art Auction, sorting out items on the table and handing them out to runners. Not sure if my help will be welcome, but hey, it gives me something fun to do.

If you are unable to make it to MFF, I hope you still have a wonderful weekend, whatever you end up doing.

The place had a very interesting vibe to it, very alternative, yuppie place. Afterwards, we walked around a bit to tour the neighborhood, and once realizing that mosquitos love us, we decided to do a driving tour of the development.

This development is rather unique in the Chicagoland area, encouraging recycling and composting, encouraging not mowing your lawn and letting native grasses grow in your yard.. They are across the street from 2 train lines and also the furthest north point for iGo car rental, which makes for living without a car. The only thing I was disappointed with was while they had a giant windmill, we didn't see any solar panels on the houses.

On seeing the hybrid cars in the driveways and political bumper stickers, Duncan remarked, "Coming to this place makes you a democrat."

The only downside to this place is that the landfill is really close to this place and on bad days, you can smell it throughout.

Yesterday morning I was told by a staff member that the room block was sold out on Thursday night of con and we got that resolved by this morning. If you had problems reserving for a hotel room yesterday, you should be able to now.

HOWEVER

Due to some rejiggering of rooms for the airline they have a contract for, we are now running very low on rooms available for Saturday night. There are about 2 dozen rooms still available on that night, so if you want to stay at the Hyatt, make your reservation now!

Link: http://woodfield.hyatt.com/groupbooking/chirwfurr2007

We are working with the Amerisuites to get a room block set up and should be set up soon.
Those reservations will need to be done over the phone as their system isn't set up for group reservations on the web. More info will follow, keep an eye on http://www.furfest.org for the latest information.

If you have any questions or problems, shoot an email to hotel (at) furfest (dot) org.

Duncan and I run the Bingo game each year so we end up not being bored.

The Good: Won an ipod Nano 4 gig this year... Granted, won an ipod shuffle last year and traded it. Couldn't find anyone to do that with this year. Anyone want one? Make me an offer.

The Bad: People complaining that kids were playing the adult Bingo game. Granted, no one young seemed to of won and we would of carded those who looked too young.

The Disturbing: The CEO was up at the Charity raffle booth trying to drum up support and when we went by to drop our tckets in, he looked at Duncan and I and asked, "Are you two brothers?"

I will be taking people over to our storage unit (not far away).

So, we are asking people to meet up at 10am at the townhouse and from there go to the storage unit to get the truck and load it up. If you end up being late, just give me a call and we can get you up to the storage Unit.

As an FYI for everyone else: We are closing our Mount Prospect PO box (though I will still be checking the MFF corporate box there regularly since it's near my work) and all of our mail is being forwarded to our new address, which is 645 Holiday Lane, Hainesville, IL 60073. Our phone numbers will remain the same. If for some reason you need our #, comment here and we'll get it to you.

To get there from Chicago and everything south of Lake Cook Road: Take the Tri-State Tollway north to the exit for IL 120 west (Belvidere Road). Go 7.9 miles. At the traffic light immediately after Hainesville Road (the one with the Walgreens and Starbucks on the corner), IL 134 will veer off to the right; follow IL 134 to the right. Go about a tenth of a mile and take the first right, Cranberry Lake Drive. Go to the first stop sign, which is Holiday Lane. You've got two options for parking:

If you are driving a car, turn left onto Holiday Lane, then left again 'cause it's an annoying one-way circle. Go 5/6 of the way around the circle and look for the building that has the numbers "641-646" on it. Park on the right side of Holiday Lane (NOT in with the garages).

If you're driving a truck or a trailer, this is easier: at the intersection of Cranberry Lake and Holiday Lane, go straight. We're in the third building on the left after the stop sign. Park anywhere along Cranberry Lake that is legal (you can go around the corner and turn around in the park parking lot to park on the south side of the street if you like).

We're going to be moving into our new place this weekend and while we have enough stuff from linnaeus's place that we could live just fine for a week, it would be nice to get all our stuff from our storage unit.

So, that's where this poll comes in... If we we were to get the stuff from the Storage unit this Saturday, we would probably start between noon and 2pm and last until the unit is emptied, which should be at max 2-3 trips. However, if we didn't get enough help, we would do the move from the storage unit on the 20th. Your help would be rewarded. Thanks!

View Poll: Moving Help!

Well, I wasn't expecting things to move this quick, but we may be able to move as soon as this weekend. Moving to a nicely laid out Townhouse in Hainesville. We'll probably need help with actual moving probably the weekend of the 20th, but move things around before then.

Time to dive on in!
