Thursday night excursions
Yesterday, [info]duncandahusky and I decided to go out after dinner and hit Prairie Croissant, a little coffee shop in Prairie Crossing. The place had a very interesting vibe to it, very alternative, yuppie place. Afterwards, we walked around a bit to tour the neighborhood, and once realizing that mosquitos love us, we decided to do a driving tour of the development.

This development is rather unique in the Chicagoland area, encouraging recycling and composting, encouraging not mowing your lawn and letting native grasses grow in your yard.. They are across the street from 2 train lines and also the furthest north point for iGo car rental, which makes for living without a car. The only thing I was disappointed with was while they had a giant windmill, we didn't see any solar panels on the houses.

On seeing the hybrid cars in the driveways and political bumper stickers, Duncan remarked, "Coming to this place makes you a democrat."

The only downside to this place is that the landfill is really close to this place and on bad days, you can smell it throughout.

Actually, the newest solar panels look like actual shingles.
Seen here ---> http://www.oksolar.com/roof/
Still pricey, but if I were building a house now (or later when I add an addition to our house) I would use these.

Neat! Yeah, Duncan pointed to an article about how people want to have solar panels at Prairie Crossing, but neighbors are doing the whole NIMBY thing with them, but there is a law that was proposed to prohibit HOA's from banning the solar panels.

Psst! Hey honey, in case you hadn't noticed, we're alternative yuppies :-) (Well, technically guppies, or maybe dinks).

Wow, sounds like a cool place. And I could get to work from there.

Hey, I remember looking at that development when we moved to the Chicago area back in the mid-90s. It was new construction then. Too far from the job, though, so we bought out in McHenry county.

(Need to get some computer stuff from your place; will send email.)
